From 1989 until 1997, Birnbaum worked as an art critic in the Swedish newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Expressen, but also as an independent curator.

Daniel Birnbaum is director of London’s Acute Art, a laboratory exploring art and technology. He is professor of philosophy at the Städelschule in Frankfurt and the author of numerous books on art and philosophy.
Nacida en 1946 en Nueva York, ciudad en la que vive y trabaja, Birnbaum se formó en arquitectura y urbanismo en el Carnegie Institute of Technology y en el San Francisco Art Institute. En 1976, se graduó en vídeo y edición electrónica en la New School for Social Research de Nueva York.
Daniel Birnbaum is the artistic director of London’s Acute Art, a laboratory exploring art and technology. He is professor of philosophy at the Städelschule in Frankfurt and a contributing editor to Artforum. From 2000 to 2010, he was rector of the Städelschule and director of its Portikus gallery.
