After placing third at the 1972 Games, Dwight Stones was considered a certainty for the 1976 Olympic title, but his form went to pieces in the rainy conditions in Montréal and he again had to settle for a bronze medal. Stones set three world records, his final one of 7-7¼ (2.32) coming only four days after the 1976 Olympic final.
