The 2.5-meter (100-inch) Irénée du Pont telescope has been in operation at Las Campanas Observatory since 1977. The telescope became a reality owing to a generous gift in 1970 from Mr. and Mrs. Crawford H. Greenewalt to the Carnegie Institution of Washington, which supplied supplemental funds.

Éleuthère Irénée du Pont de Nemours, né Éleuthère Irénée du Pont à Paris le 24 juin 1771 et mort à Philadelphie (Pennsylvanie) le 31 octobre 1834, est un chimiste et industriel français, naturalisé américain après son départ de la France. Il étudie la fabrication de la poudre à canon avec Lavoisier.
16 de jun. de 2015 · The Du Ponts trace their fortune to Eleuthère Irénée “E.I.” du Pont (1771-1834; pictured). A prisoner during the French Revolution, he fled to the U.S. in 1799. The gunpowder manufacturing company he founded in Delaware evolved into chemical giant DuPont.
