Méliès dirigió más de 500 películas entre 1896 y 1913, con duraciones que oscilaban entre 1 minuto y 40 minutos. La temática de estas películas suele ser similar a la de los espectáculos de magia que Méliès había realizado, con "trucos" y sucesos imposibles, como objetos que desaparecen o cambian de tamaño.
