Gustavianum is the oldest standing building of Uppsala University. It was built between 1622 and 1625, and was used as the main building of the university between 1778 and 1887. Since 1997, it has been used as the university's museum.

Since 1997, Gustavianum has been a public museum where the university's rich cultural heritage collections are on public display in permanent and temporary exhibitions. In autumn 2019, Gustavianum closed one again for extensive renovation.
Gustavianum's history in brief. Gustavianum, which derives its name from Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden from 1611 to 1632, was designed to meet the University’s need for lecture halls and meeting rooms. It also provided space for a dining room, student rooms and eventually a library.
