Carol A. Mutter (born December 17, 1945) is a retired United States Marine Corps lieutenant general. She is one of the first women in the history of the United States Armed Forces to be appointed to a three-star grade, the first in the Marine Corps. She retired from the Marine Corps on January 1, 1999.

Lieutenant General Carol A. Mutter, the first woman in the Marine Corps to attain 3-star rank, retired from the Marine Corps effective 1 January 1999. Her last assignment was as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower and Reserve Affairs (DC/S,M&RA), Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington, D.C. General Mutter was born in Greeley, Colorado in 1945.
In 1991, she became a Brigadier General with reassignment to Marine Headquarters in Washington, D.C. and in 1994 Carol Mutter became the first woman Major General which also designated her as the senior woman in all branches of U.S. military service.
