Champ Clark (born March 7, 1850, near Lawrenceburg, Ky., U.S.—died March 2, 1921, Washington, D.C.) was the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives (1911–19) who narrowly lost the presidential nomination to Woodrow Wilson at the 1912 Democratic Convention on the 46th ballot.
Joel Bennett Clark (January 8, 1890 – July 13, 1954), better known as Bennett Champ Clark, was a Democratic United States senator from Missouri from 1933 until 1945, and was later a circuit judge of the District of Columbia Circuit. He was a leading isolationist in foreign policy.
Champ Clark was a very ambitious man and sought to become the House Majority Leader in 1903, but was defeated by Congressman John Sharp Williams, a hard drinking and witty man from Mississippi. It was only a momentary setback, as Williams was also an ambitious man and was elected to the United States Senate in 1908.
