Major General James Clinton (August 9, 1736 – September 22, 1812) was an American Revolutionary War officer who, with John Sullivan, led in 1779 the Sullivan Expedition in what is now western New York to attack British-allied Seneca and other Iroquois villages.

Led by Major General John Sullivan and Brigadier General James Clinton, the expedition was conducted during the summer of 1779, beginning June 18 when the army marched from Easton, Pennsylvania, to October 3 when it abandoned Fort Sullivan, built at Tioga, to return to George Washington 's main camp in New Jersey.
James Clinton was a brevet major general who fought in the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. He participated in the Saratoga Campaign, the Sullivan-Clinton Expedition, and the siege of Yorktown.
