Clarence Elkins was wrongfully convicted of raping and killing his mother-in-law and his niece in 1998. He served six years in prison before DNA testing excluded him as the perpetrator and identified another man, Earl Mann, who pleaded guilty in 2008.
No physical evidence connected Elkins to the crime. Limited DNA testing showed that hairs found on Johnson’s body did not come from Elkins. Nonetheless, in 1999, Clarence Elkins was convicted of rape and murder and sentenced to life in prison on the basis of his niece’s identification, which she repeated in court.
For seven and a half years, Clarence Elkins sat behind bars for a horrendous crime he knew he didn't commit -- the brutal rape and murder of his mother-in-law, as well as the beating and rape of his 6-year-old niece. At home, his wife, spurned by her family, never gave up on him.

His wife, and the daughter of the victim, helped find the real perpetrator and win Elkins’ release.
