Daniel Smith Donelson (June 23, 1801 – April 17, 1863) was a Tennessee planter, politician, and soldier. The historic Fort Donelson was named for him when he was serving as a Brigadier in the Tennessee militia, early in the American Civil War.

Daniel Smith Donelson could boast of having some of the most distinguished ancestry in the new state of Tennessee. Both of his grandfathers enjoyed that combination of rough frontier experience and what were called “gentlemanly attainments” that served to carve a civilization out of the raw American wilderness.

Donelson fought in several battles, including the Battle of Murfreesboro, where he was part of the charge that broke the right wing of the Federal army. In January 1863, Donelson was given command of the Department of East Tennessee. He remained in command of the department until his death on April 17 1863 near Knoxville at Montvale Springs, TN.
