Maintaining satisfactory relations with British India, he introduced needed reforms in Afghanistan and steered his country on a moderate political course.
Habibullah Khan was the amir of Afghanistan who tried to keep his country neutral in World War I and modernize it. He was killed by his opponents who resented his pro-British policy and his failure to unite Muslim Central Asia.
