Roman Wladimir Jackiw (/ r oʊ ˈ m æ n dʒ æ ˈ k iː v /; Ukrainian: Роман Володимир Яцків, romanized: Roman Volodymyr Yatskiv; 8 November 1939 – 14 June 2023) was a Polish-born American theoretical physicist and Dirac Medallist.

JACKIW: So thank you. The title I chose is Surprising Successes of Quantum Field Theory. And perhaps the greatest surprise about field theory is that today it continues to provide the only framework for discussing successfully dynamical issues of fundamental physics.

I was Roman’s PhD student at MIT while in graduate school from 1984 to 1988. In those days physics undergraduate education in The Netherlands, where I grew up, was a five-year program consisting solely of physics and supporting math, longer and more focused than a U.S. college physics major.
