Theodor Fontane (born December 30, 1819, Neuruppin, Brandenburg [Germany]—died September 20, 1898, Berlin) was a writer who is considered the first master of modern realistic fiction in Germany. He began his literary career in 1848 as a journalist, serving for several years in England as correspondent for two Prussian newspapers.
Fontane begins his pharmacy apprenticeship in Berlin and works as a pharmacist in Burg, Leipzig, Dresden and Berlin. 1835, his first meeting with Emilie Rouanet-Kummer, his later wife. First poems. First attempts at prose. First translations from English: poems, ballads, Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
