Such theories seek to identify the underlying psychological and cognitive mechanisms that give rise to, and explain the persistence of, various religious beliefs and behaviors.
See Harvey, 1995, where Harvey seeks to describe and evaluate a theory of projection contained in Feuerbach’s later writings on religion that he regards as incompatible with the account contained in The Essence of Christianity before going on (cf. pp. 229–280) to compare the former with several contemporary theories of religious projection.

His critique of religion The Essence of Christianity (1841) almost instantaneously turned him into a figure of great renown. The book became the centre of controversy among an inquisitive and religiously aware German public.
