Sauron, también conocido como Annatar, Gorthaur, El Nigromante, El Señor Oscuro y como El Señor de los Anillos, es un personaje ficticio que forma parte del legendarium creado por el escritor británico J. R. R. Tolkien.
Es un Maiar, un espiritu nacido del Pensamiento de Eru Ilúvatar, el ser supremo, pero menor en Jerarquía y poder a los Valar. Sin embargo, de entre los Maiar, Sauron era el más poderoso y pertenecía a la más alta jerarquía de entre todos los Maiar, justo detrás de los propios Valar.

Sauron (quenya, pronciado [sauron]) fue el más grande y fiel sirviente de Morgoth, antes y durante la Primera Edad. Originalmente era un Maia de Aulë llamado "Mairon", fue atrapado por Melkor, y como "Gorthaur" se convirtió en lugarteniente de Morgoth en la Guerra de Beleriand.
