Gerry and his band do a good enough job to hold your attention especially on the ferry bits - the songs are lively and infectious. OK they're not the Beatles but hey, they were just exceptional, Gerry and the band are mere mortals and carry the film very well. their individual characters shining through.
Ferry Cross the Mersey and A Hard Day's Night were both shot by Gilbert Taylor (who also shot Repulsion and Dr. Strangelove, holy shit), which only serves to emphasize the gap in quality of direction: Lester knows how to create playful, anarchic energy, whereas Summers' best efforts mostly amount to distractingly bizarre camera angles.
