He was the second of 11 children to Ethel (née Skakel) and Robert F. Kennedy. He was named after his grandfather Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., the patriarch of the Kennedy family.
Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. Joseph Patrick "Joe" Kennedy, Sr. (September 6, 1888 – November 18, 1969) was a prominent United States businessman and political figure, and the father of President John F. Kennedy and Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy. He was a leading member of the Democratic Party and of the Irish Catholic community.
Joseph P. Kennedy was better suited than most to flourish in this speculative heyday. Never fooled by get-rich-quick schemes, he knew that expertise, hard work, and inside information were the keys to success. Kennedy began learning about the market in 1919 when he joined the Boston office of the Hayden Stone investment house.
Tragically, he lost his life flying a dangerous volunteer mission in 1944. Joseph Kennedy Sr. had been grooming both of his sons for political office. However, the weightiest of expectations often rested with Joe Jr. With Joe Jr.'s death, John likely felt a sense of obligation to carry on his family's dream.
