Skupinu založili v roce 2008 Thom Powers a Alixa Xayalith poté, co s hudebním inženýrem Aaronem Shortem, společným spolužákem z aucklendské hudební univerzity MAINZ, natočili dvě EP nazvané This Machine a No Light .
