Tony Curtis wurde 1925 in New York als Bernard Schwartz geboren. Er wuchs mit zwei Brüdern zunächst in Manhattan, dann in der Bronx auf. Seine Eltern – Emanuel Schwartz (der sich später Manuel nannte) und Helen Klein – kamen als in Ungarn geborene jüdische Einwanderer aus der ungarischen Kleinstadt Mátészalka und betrieben eine Schneiderei, in der die Familie zeitweise auch lebte.
