Murray Forbes (1843-1936), carefully preserved but long forgotten, was rediscovered in the attic of the Forbes House atop Milton Hill outside Boston, prior to its opening as a house museum in 1964. Other family members thereafter generously donated additional papers--notably those of Francis Blackwell Forbes (1839-1908).

He began to work for the family’s shipping company Perkins & Co. when he assisted with a voyage to China at the age of 13.
