Narrated by Annette Bening, A Towering Task tells the remarkable story of the Peace Corps, taking viewers on a journey of what it means to be a global citizen. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy gave Americans the opportunity to serve their country in a new way by forming the Peace Corps. Since then, more than 240,000 have traveled to 140 countries to carry out the organization's mission.
One of the more in-depth segments involves the longest-serving former director Loret Miller Ruppe, who was director from 1981-89. Her recounting the story of the Prime Minister of Fiji and his words to Ronald Reagan are a highlight. Ms. DeJoseph and Ms. Kelly have delivered a most-informative history of the Peace Corps in a matter-of-fact manner.

Volunteers served two years, with a few, very few, extending to a third year, and staff were limited to 5 years of service.
