  3. Alun Lewis was born on 1 July 1915, exactly one year before the first day of the Battle of the Somme, at Cwmaman, a South Wales mining village. His father was a school teacher; his three brothers worked in the mines. From a young age, Lewis felt he had a vocation to be a writer.
