Born into a poor Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York, he was brought up by his strict grandfather who taught him religion and modesty. Plagued by self-doubt, young Harvey preferred the attractions of Coney Island to the synagogue and found solace in the cinema. After a stint in the marines, he would eventually find his way into the world of film.
