History []. In 1977, director Richard Donner set about simultaneously filming an epic two-part adaptation of the Superman comic book series. With approximately 70% of Superman II made and after significantly going over budget and over schedule on both movies, filming on Superman II was suspended in October 1977 so that Donner could focus on completing the first film, Superman.
