He must have recognized the unfortunate name choice early on, because he rebranded his outfit the Order of Illuminati two years later in 1778. The name "Illuminati" comes from the word "illuminate," as Weishaupt sought to illuminate the human soul and bring about heaven on Earth.

Adam Weishaupt blev 1775 professor i naturrätt och kanonisk rätt vid universitetet i Ingolstadt, men avsattes 1785 då han ådrog sig teologernas hat och regeringens misstankar.
