Castro ( Salentino: Casciu) is a town and comune in the Italian province of Lecce in the Apulia region of south-eastern Italy . History. Castro derives its name from Castrum Minervae (Latin for "Athena's castle"), which was an ancient town of the Sallentini, about 15 kilometres (9 mi) south of Hydruntum.
Located south of Lecce, it's referred to as the "pearl of the Salento". In an area studded by lovely coastal towns, Castro really is a gem. It retains its Old World atmosphere, but in the upper medieval town on the hill, and the marina below that still holds its tradition as a fishing village.
