John Edgar Hoover (January 1, 1895 – May 2, 1972) was an influential but controversial director of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He was the founder of the present form of the agency, and remained director for 48 years, until his death in 1972, at age 77.

His father worked as a printer for the federal government, and he enjoyed a comfortable middle class upbringing. He graduated from National University Law School in 1916, while working as a clerk at the Library of Congress.
