William H. Seward. Born in New York State in 1801, Seward attended local schools before entering Union College at the age of fifteen. After graduating from Union in 1820, he read law and was admitted to the bar. In 1823, he established himself in Auburn, New York. Auburn would remain his home for the rest of his life.

Seward continued in President Andrew Johnson’s Cabinet and is known for the “Seward’s Folly” purchase of Alaska from Russia. He served as a governor of New York (Whig, 1839-42) but was defeated on his first try for that office. He served as a state senator (1830-1834). Son, William H., Jr., was a Union Army general.
