Mbembe makes the correlation between ‘excess’, sacrifice and loss, but equates the ‘surplus’ with that which ‘has no price’. Mbembe uses surplus differently from Bataille, to signify ‘inappropriable’ and non-quantifiable remainders. The goal of the inappropriable is a noble aim and not the object of criticism here.
