After reading the soviet rule book I'm confused on why anyone would ever take a squad of 12 shtrafbat with rifles over a inexperienced rifle squad of 12 men with rifles. Shtrafbat starts with the story of Soviet officer Vassily Tvyordokhlebov (literally Man of Hard Bread) who was captured by German troops and then gunned down in a massacre. He survives, but is transferred to a penal unit because he had allowed himself to be taken prisoner.
