He was 74. Merrill, who had waged a two-year battle with lung cancer, died Monday at his seaside cottage in Falmouth Foreside near Portland, the Portland Press-Herald said, quoting a family member.

Biografia La carriera. Originario del Connecticut, Merrill studiò al Bowdoin College di Brunswick (), iniziando a recitare alla radio dove si distinse grazie alla voce dal timbro profondo in alcune serie radiofoniche dell'epoca, tra le quali Superman.Nel 1944, durante il servizio militare, fece il suo debutto cinematografico nel dramma bellico Vittoria alata (1944) di George Cukor.
Biographie. Gary Merrill est originaire de Hartford dans le Connecticut.Après avoir suivi des cours d'art dramatique à Broadway, il fait ses débuts sur scène en 1937 dans la pièce The Eternal Road.Il fait la connaissance de Bette Davis pendant le tournage de Ève, et l'épouse peu de temps après.Le couple adopte deux enfants et divorce en 1960.
