Pada tahun 1908, ia didaftarkan di sekolah Kweekschool (sekolah guru negara) di Fort de Kock. Di sekolah, Tan merupakan salah satu murid yang cerdas, sehingga gurunya, GH Horensma mengusulkan pada Tan untuk melanjutkan pendidikannya di Belanda.
