Martin Walser was born in 1927 in Wasserburg, near Lindau. His parents owned a small inn and also operated a coal dealership. His father was a diabetic and died when Walser was eleven. After attending high school, he worked in an anti-aircraft post and then in the army, when he was taken prisoner by the Americans.
