The sand tiger shark, also known as the gray nurse shark, is a slow-moving coastal predator distinguished by its flattened, conical snout and spiked, protruding teeth similar to the tiger shark. It has small eyes and light brown skin that resembles sand, helping the shark blend into its surroundings when looked at from above.
The maximum length attained for the sand tiger shark is 3.2 meters (10.5 feet), although the usual size is between 1.2 and 2.7 meters in length. It is a migratory species, inhabiting shallow coastal waters in the summer and moving to deeper or southern waters in the winter.

In the upper jaw, smaller but similarly structured intermediate teeth separate the front teeth from the side teeth. In both jaws, the side teeth gradually decrease in size from the front of the mouth toward the back.
