Porgy and Bess. (1956) This 1956 recording based on George Gershwin 's opera Porgy and Bess was the second "complete" recording of the opera after the 1951 version, and the first recording of the work to feature jazz singers and musicians instead of operatic singers and a classical orchestra.

An unusual Porgy and Bess, with superb arrangements of the Gershwins music and great interpretations of the all stars performers. This modernized and memorable jazz version of the legendary American Folk opera was recorded in New York and Los Angeles in 1956.
Johnny Hartman's first proper LP came in 1956 with 'Songs from the Heart,' recorded for Bethlehem and featuring a quartet led by trumpeter Howard McGhee. He recorded a second 'All of Me' later that year, but then was virtually off-record until 1963, when his duet album with John Coltrane appeared on Impulse.
