In this exhibition, we focus on 25 icons from the worlds of theater, film, music, dance, and television—a tour de force of some of the greatest entertainers of the last 100 years as depicted by the court artist of the performing arts, Al Hirschfeld.
He drew his first caricature for a film in 1925, and would continue to draw for film studios into the 1990s. In the 1950s and 60s, Hirschfeld main film client was United Artists, the studio without an actual studio lot, leasing space and shooting on location for essentially independent productions.
Hirschfeld is best known for the work he did at The New York Times. With only a handful of rare exceptions, his illustrations appeared on the paper's drama pages every Sunday for more than seven decades. On Broadway, he was a familiar face at rehearsals and first nights.
Al Hirschfeld (1903–2003) brought a distinct style to celebrity drawings, making his work instantly recognizable —to be “Hirschfelded” was a sign that a performer had arrived.
