Louie Bellson – Drums (tracks 1-14) This is one of a series of recordings in which producer Norman Granz put Art Tatum into the studio with a variety of other jazzmen. The results were stunningly impressive, particularly as Tatum had never been considered the ideal accompanying pianist.
The “Blues in C” which Tatum, Carter and Louis Bellson play here is the perfect example of the terrifying problems facing Tatum's collaborators. The track opens with an unaccompanied piano solo which defines in a few bars the entire history of the Blues. The solo is utterly masterful, comprehensive, faultless.
