“Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown” is an essay by the English writer Virginia Woolf (1882-1941). In this text, Woolf argues that literary conventions should change as society does and proposes that literary Modernism is a means to represent the changing condition of individuals and society in the early 20th century.
Mr. Bennett, alone of the Edwardians, would keep his eyes in the carriage. He, indeed, would observe every detail with immense care. He would notice the advertisements; the pictures of Swanage and Portsmouth ; the way in which the cushion bulged between the buttons ; how Mrs. Brown wore.
“Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown” is written as a polemical answer to Arnold Bennett’s claim that the novel is in crisis due to the failure of Georgian novelists in the art of “character-making” which he finds crucial for successful novel-writing.

In it she celebrated the breakdown in patriarchal values that had occurred “in or about December, 1910”—during Fry’s exhibit “Manet and the Post-Impressionists”—and she attacked “materialist” novelists for omitting the essence of character.
