Whitfield Crane und der in Deutschland geborene Klaus Eichstadt wuchsen beide in derselben Wohngegend im kalifornischen Palo Alto auf. In der High School wurden beide enge Freunde. Nach Beendigung der Schulausbildung zog Crane zusammen mit einem Freund nach Santa Barbara und gründete seine erste Band, mit der er auch ein Demo aufnahm.
