The university started in 1933 when the Kyiv Aviation Institute was founded on the basis of the mechanical department of Kyiv Machine-Building Institute. The university consists of five institutes, ten separate faculties, two lyceums, six colleges and Military Training Department.

The National Aviation University dates its origins back to 1933 with the Kyiv Aviation Institute’s enrolment of students across four faculties: operational, aircraft, engine and ground structures. In 1934, it became the Voroshilov Kyiv Aviation Institute of Civil Air Fleet.
