He was born in Harlem, where he began singing doo-wop songs with his friends on the streets. He joined a group, the Premiers, and helped members Herman Santiago and Jimmy Merchant rewrite a song they had composed to create "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", which won the group an audition with Gee Records.
Doo-wop became very popular in the 1950s and 60s, particularly in urban ghettos. The structure of doo-wop music generally featured a tenor lead vocalist singing the melody of the song, with a trio or quartet singing background harmony.
