On October 10, 1844, he married his childhood friend Evelyn Clark. She died in 1863; they had no children. On November 18, 1868, two weeks after winning the vice presidency, he married Ellen (Ella) M. Wade (1836–1911), a niece of Senator Benjamin Wade.
Schuyler’s political career began in earnest after his marriage to Evelyn Clark in 1844. As Schuyler was anti-slavery, he eventually left the Whig party and helped build the newly formed Republican Party.
