East German Ute Geweniger had broken the world record at a meet in Magdeburg in May 1980. In the heats in Moscow she bettered that record with 1:10.11. She could not reproduce that in the final, coming hom in 1:10.22, but that was third fastest time ever, and won her the gold medal.
