Barre Phillips (born October 27, 1934, in San Francisco, California, United States) [1] is an American jazz bassist. A professional musician since 1960, he moved to New York City in 1962, then to Europe in 1967. [2] Since 1972, he has been based in southern France where, in 2014, he founded the European Improvisation Center.

In March 2017, Barre recorded what he says will be his last solo album, the final chapter of his “Journal Violone”: it is a beautiful and moving musical statement.
Barre Phillips ’s End to End album, released in 2018, brought the documentation of his music for solo bass to a profound conclusion. Now Face à Face returns the emphasis to collaborative work, to dialogue and shared creation, in improvisations with György Kürtág Jr.
