Khalil Esfandiary-Bakhtiary (Persian: خلیل اسفندیاری بختیاری; April 3, 1901 – January 19, 1983), was an Iranian politician and diplomat. Bakhtiary was Iran's Ambassador to West Germany from 1952 to 1961.
Soraya was the elder child and only daughter of Khalil Esfandiary-Bakhtiary (1901–1983), a Bakhtiari nobleman and Iranian ambassador to West Germany in the 1950s, and his Russian-born German wife Eva Karl (1906–1994).

Getty Images. 73 years ago, on 12 February 1951, two days before the most romantic day of the modern calendar, the Shah of Iran married Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiari at the Golestan Palace in Tehran. Just seven years later, in 1958, the couple divorced and Soraya would inherit the epithet ‘the princess with the sad eyes’.
