Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville. 28 April 1742 – 28 May 1811. As a lawyer, Dundas fought in Scottish courts for the freedom of a slave, and forever changed the law of slavery in Scotland. As a politician, he consistently and publicly condemned slavery and the slave trade as being contrary to justice and humanity.
But now clamour is growing for the removal of the statue of Henry Dundas, the 1st Viscount Melville, from St Andrew Square in Edinburgh as awareness has grown that he was instrumental in prolonging the slave trade involving the UK for many years.

16 de may. de 2024 · About this artwork. No one in late eighteenth century Scotland was as powerful as Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville. Trained as a lawyer, Dundas moved speedily into politics. Solicitor-General at twenty-four, Lord Advocate at thirty-three, Dundas became the 'intimate friend and trusted lieutenant' of the British prime minister, William Pitt.
