Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, PC, FRSE (28 April 1742 – 28 May 1811), styled as Lord Melville from 1802, was the trusted lieutenant of British prime minister William Pitt and the most powerful politician in Scotland in the late 18th century.

He controlled Scottish elections and patronage and was widely known as 'Harry the Ninth, the uncrowned King of Scotland'.
Henry Dundas helped to move Britain toward the ultimate goal of abolition of the slave trade and slavery. Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville. 28 April 1742 – 28 May 1811. As a lawyer, Dundas fought in Scottish courts for the freedom of a slave, and forever changed the law of slavery in Scotland.
He became Viscount Melville on 24 Dec. 1802. This honour and the compliment of being consulted on Indian affairs put him in a good humour with Addington’s ministry, but he failed to induce Pitt, who professed surprise at his accepting a peerage, to join the government in March 1803.
