Bungaree, or Boongaree (c. 1775 – 24 November 1830), born presumably in the Rocky Point area, New South Wales, was an Aboriginal Australian from the Darug people of the Broken Bay north of Sydney, who was known as an explorer, entertainer, and Aboriginal community leader.
Bungaree became the first known Aboriginal person to circumnavigate Australia and contribute to the mapping of the Australian coastline. A short man with a sharp intellect, Bungaree arrived in Sydney in the 1790s with the remains of his Kuring-gai mob, after conflicts with white settlers had escalated along the Hawkesbury River.
