At 14 Fields went to Boston, working as clerk in a bookseller’s shop. While he was employed there, he began to write for the local newspapers.

He and his brother were raised by his mother, aunt and uncle. After some local schooling, at the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to a publishing company in Boston.
