La capital de Mauritania es desde el año 1957 la ciudad de Nuakchot, la más grande e importante del país. Fue construida por colonos franceses en los años 50 del pasado siglo XX y en origen fue un Ksar, un pequeño fuerte desde el que soldados de la nación colonizadora vigilaban la ruta comercial que enlazaba Marruecos con Senegal.
